Kouluissa nuorille opetetaan ihmisen biologiaa, mutta kovin syvälle yksityiskohtiin siellä ei usein ehditä mennä. Ihmisen seksielämään liittyvät seikat ja ruumiinosat ovat kuitenkin elämänlaadun kannalta ensiarvoisen tärkeitä, joten niiden soisi olevan nykyistä paremmin ihmisten tiedossa.
Tätä mieltä on myös newyorkilainen Laura Kingsley, joka huomasi, etteivät ihmiset tunnista naisen klitorista. Siksi hän päätti ryhtyä tekemään asialle jotain konkreettista. Kingsley ryhtyi nimittäin piirtämään klitoriksia väriliiduille asvalttiin eri puolille New Yorkia.
While waiting to march at the Pride Parade, a woman walked toward us as a representative from her group of friends to ask, "Can I ask you what that is?" . "It's the clitoris." . "You were right!" She turns excitedly to her smiling friend who recognized the drawing. "We were standing here trying to figure that out." . Two minutes later, another representative from a different friend group similarly questioned, "What is that?" . "It's the clitoris." . "I told you!!!!!" She exclaimed as she beckoned her friend to take a closer look.
As I hopped on my bike to ride away, a young couple in their twenties sat down on the bench a few feet from the newly finished drawing. Curious to see what they thought, I circled back. . "We have been trying to figure out what it is. I want to say octopus, but there are only four of them [tentacles]." . After I revealed it is the clitoris, they looked at the drawing a bit more intensely. This sparked a very animated anatomy lesson that ended with me laying on the drawing and acting out the glans, bulbs, and other parts of the clitoris during various stages of sexual arousal. . Surprised that this is new information to them, one expressed, "I know it's taboo and all, but they really should teach us this." . I absolutely agree with my new friends.
“Clitorises! I can spot a clitoris from a mile away!” A woman exclaimed as she walked from the trees toward the pumpkins. . We were excited that she recognized the clitoris, and she responded, “Shouldn’t everyone be able to?” . “Look!” She said to her family as they caught up to her. . “It’s the external part – the glans,” she stood on the largest pumpkin and pointed to the respective part of the drawing. “And the rest is internal!” She motioned to the other parts of the clitoris and continued explaining to her embarrassed teenage daughters, “There are the legs and the bulbs.” . Her boyfriend turned to us and smiled, “It’s not like she has a graduate degree in this or anything.” . “You do?!” We asked. . “Yes! I teach sex education to middle and high school students. They are normally surprised when I am teaching them about the clitoris. But it’s important.” . Her family and her students are lucky to have her.
A man took a break from tricks with his friends at the skatepark to say, "We are trying to figure out what you are drawing." . He came back once the drawing was complete and said he figured it out. "What's the right name of the flower? The clitoris." . We celebratory high-fived, and he mentioned he is from California. He has been living in Copenhagen for the past couple of years, so he commented on the difference of sexual attitudes compared to back home, “It seems that people are more sexually empowered here." *** "Rosen er røde" means "Roses are red" in Danish.
“It’s an octopus?” Three women asked while walking in the rain on the Cirkelbroen (Circle Bridge). . I laughed, and said, “That is the most common guess in the history of Clitorosity. It’s actually the clitoris, both the internal and external parts.” . “Ah, out of context, I was not sure, but now I can see it,” one of the women commented. . The other two still looked at it with their heads tilted, clearly in deep thought. *** “Udvind Din Horisont” means “Expand Your Horizons” in Danish.
While the 'K' in truck was getting its finishing touches, I heard the sound of a car approaching on my side. A man with a full gray mustache and beard poked his head out of the driver's window of a red USDoT pickup truck. He asked, "What are you doing?" . "Making a chalk drawing!" . "It looks nice! Though, you know it's not going to stay very long with all the trucks running over it. You should draw a big circle around it to protect it." . "That's a good idea!" I laughed. "I know it won't last – but I actually like it that way." . We wished each other good days, and he hopped back on the highway.
